Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has sparked debate by saying that northern leaders should take responsibility for the region’s poverty and underdevelopment. The Kaduna northern leaders poverty issue gained attention after he spoke on ARISE News and TVC News following an All Progressives Congress (APC) event in Kaduna.
Uba Sani said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should not be blamed for the North’s long-standing problems. Instead, he argued that political leaders who have held power or influence in the region since Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999 should accept some responsibility.

The governor also highlighted problems such as poor access to education and economic hardship. He called on northern leaders to address these long-standing challenges rather than placing all the blame on the current federal government.
A major part of Uba Sani’s argument focused on education, especially the number of children who are not attending school in northern Nigeria. He referred to figures from 2023, saying that about 70% of Nigeria’s out-of-school children lived in the northern region.

He argued that state governments and local leaders should do more to improve education and address other challenges. The Kaduna northern leaders poverty debate has also raised questions about how public funds have been used over the years. Critics of northern leadership argue that government spending has not led to enough progress in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
