Imo State first robotic assisted surgery marks a. significant development in the state’s healthcare system.The procedure was successfully completed  on August 21, 2026, at the Specialist Hospital, Umuguma, Owerri, by Nigerian and international medical specialists at the Imo state Rebotic centre.

Professor Kingsley Ekwueme, , a UK based consultant robotic and laparoscopic surgeon from  Imo State, led the  procedure, This is part of the  state’s broader investment  in specialized  healthcare, medical technology  and training for local health workers.

Governor Hope Uzodimma said that theatre is ready for clinical use, and the initiative will bring together advanced technology, specialist expertise and knowledge transfer.

The medical team  that carried out the surgery included Nigerian and international specialists led by Professor Ekwueme, He called the procedure a complete success and noted that robotic surgery could be used to treat localised prostate cancer.

Imo State first robotic assisted surgery, surgeons used a specialised robotic systems to perform procedures  through small incisions. They control the surgical instruments from a console,  The technology does not replace the surgeon, the  surgeon remains in control pf the system thoroughout the operation.

The first surgery was significant because it focused on localised prostate cancer. According to Professor Ekwueme, robotic surgery can help surgeons remove cancerous tissue while protecting key functions such as urinary and sexual function.

He also said that  robotic surgery for cancer has a phenomenal success rate,especially  for  prostate  cancer. he  futher said that patient  should not  have to endure long recovery times or lose key bodily function s after  prostate  surgery.

Governor Hope Uzodimma witnessed the landmark procedure. He said is an important step towards improving access to advanced healthcare in the state.The governor added that the facility will do more than to treat patients,  it will  also help  with early detection and prevention through regular medical check-ups

He said the project is not just about bringing in advanced equipment, it also includes training for local Professionals.The goal is to build local capacity instead of only installing new technology at the hospital.

According to Uzodimma, the centre will run as a public private partnership. The private sector is providing  significant funding. He also said that this model will help ensure the  facility is  sustained and well managed in the long term.

The new facility will support specialists healthcare services such as advanced surgery and cancer trearment. He said the wider hospital complex  now has an expanded ICU, diagnostic services,a surgical theatres,maternity care and a dedicated oncology department.

According to earlier reports, the facility will offer MEI, CT Scans, mammography, Radiography and X ray services., it wikk also have medical oxgyen  infrastructure and backup power system to support hospital operations,

The governor called on residents to register for the  Imo State Health Insurance Scheme, He said having insurance  cam make advanced medical treatment more affordable and easier to access.
