The trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three young children in January 2023, has moved forward after prosecutors wrapped up their case.

Clancy, 36, admits she strangled her children; Cora, 5 years old, Dawson, 3 years old and Callan, 8 months old , at their home in Duxbury. Her lawyers argues she was suffering from severe mental illness and postpartum psychosis, and and therefore she should not be held criminally responsible.

Prosecutors spent weeks presenting testimony from more than 70 witnesses, Clancy’s former husband, doctors, and mental health providers. They claim Clancy acted deliberately and was not in a psychotic state. They pointed to her medical appointments, medication changes, and behavior in the days before the tragedy.

One psychiatrist testified that during a telehealth appointment the day before the killings, Clancy denied having suicidal or homicidal thoughts and showed no signs of psychosis.

Her husband, Patrick Clancy, described how her anxiety, suicidal thoughts and intrusive thoughts worsened after the birth of their third child in May 2022. She sought help from several professionals and was prescribed different medications. Mental health providers confirmed she reported anxiety, insomnia, and intrusive thoughts, and even contacted a crisis center twice in December 2022.

The defense began Lindsay Clancy Trial by portraying Clancy as a loving mother who cherished her children. Her mother testified that becoming a parent was one of Lindsay’s greatest joys. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington questioned the quality of her medical care and pointed to her online searches about psychosis, hallucinations, and medications as signs of her deteriorating mental state.

Clancy later told her husband that she heard a man’s voice ordering her to kill the children immediately or lose her chance. However Prosecutors challenged whether her actions before and after the killings truly matched psychosis.

Lindsay Clancy Trial trial is expected to continue for several more weeks. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder. If convicted, she could face life in prison. If the jury decides she was not criminally responsible due to mental illness, she could instead be committed to a psychiatric facility.
