The trial over Tupac Shakur’s death has started in Las Vegas, bringing new attention to one of the most famous unsolved cases in music history.

Prosecutors say Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a 63‑year‑old former gang leader, helped plan the drive‑by shooting that killed Tupac in 1996. Davis has pleaded not guilty. They argue that while he didn’t pull the trigger, he organized the attack after a fight involving his nephew, Orlando Anderson and Tupac earlier that night.

Tupac was shot on September 7, 1996, after attending Mike Tyson boxing match in Las Vegas. He died six days later at the age of 25. Prosecutors claim Davis gathered men, got a gun, and set out in cars before spotting Tupac and Death Row Records co‑founder Suge Knight. They claimed Davis handed the gun to Anderson, who then fired into Tupac’s car.

However, Witnesses have described the chaos of that night. A former Las Vegas police officer, Garry Dale said he rode with Tupac in the ambulance but the rapper didn’t name his attackers. Another witness, Ingrid Stokes, recalled driving near Tupac’s group when she noticed a car following them. Moments later, gunfire broke out.

Tupac murder trial also focuses on Davis’s own words. In a 2019 memoir, he admitted being in the vehicle and claimed he gave the gun to Anderson. Prosecutors says this proves his role in the killing.  Davis’s lawyers argue the book was partly fictionalized and question why it took nearly 30 years for charges to be filed.  They also challenge the reliability of witnesses and point to missing police reports and conflicting accounts.

Tupac murder trial is expected to continue with more testimony from investigators, experts, and witnesses. For the first time, jurors will hear a detailed look at the evidence surrounding Tupac’s death. Prosecutors insist that Davis helped orchestrate the attack, while the defense argues that the case is weak and unreliable.
