The Lagos State House of Assembly clarified that it did not order tear gas or arrests during a protest at its gate on Wednesday, following demolitions in the Makoko area.

Assembly Responds to Allegations

Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, said reports suggesting lawmakers “watched” or authorized force are false. The Assembly was on recess at the time.

After learning about the protest, four lawmakers approached the demonstrators to encourage dialogue. They explained that grievances would be documented and addressed. However, protesters refused peaceful engagement and tried to enter the Assembly complex.

Protesters’ Conduct

Ogundipe said one individual, Taiwo Hassan (alias Hassan Soweto), became confrontational. He verbally abused lawmakers and accused the Police Commissioner of crimes without evidence. Security personnel intervened to maintain order.

“The Assembly did not order tear gas, approve arrests, or direct any use of force,” Ogundipe added. Lawmakers withdrew after the Police Commissioner advised them to avoid escalation.

On the Makoko Demolition

The Assembly stated that demolitions and urban development issues fall under executive and regulatory authorities. It supports dialogue, lawful engagement, and humane approaches to urban challenges.

“The House remains committed to peaceful civic engagement and protecting democratic rights,” the statement concluded.
