US Imposes New Sanctions on Iran Over Protest Crackdown
The United States has announced a new round of sanctions against Iran over its response to nationwide protests. The US Treasury Department revealed the measures on January 15.
The sanctions target senior Iranian officials and financial networks. US authorities say these groups played a key role in suppressing protests and moving oil revenue through hidden banking channels.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said the action followed reports of widespread unrest across Iran. Officials said security forces used violence against peaceful demonstrators in several regions.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States supports the Iranian people in their calls for freedom and justice. He added that the Treasury will continue to act against those responsible for human rights abuses.
Iranian Officials and Security Units Sanctioned
The sanctions include senior figures linked to Iran’s national security leadership. US officials say these individuals helped plan or approve the crackdown on protests.
The measures also cover commanders from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and regional police units. According to US officials, security forces fired on protesters in provinces such as Lorestan and Fars.
Financial Networks and Oil Revenue
In a separate step, the US targeted shadow banking networks tied to Bank Melli and Shahr Bank. OFAC said these networks moved billions of dollars from oil and petrochemical exports.
US authorities claim the networks used shell companies based in countries including the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Officials say some of the funds supported internal repression and Iran-linked groups abroad.
Internet Controls During Protests
US officials also cited Iran’s use of advanced internet controls during the protests. These systems reportedly disrupted messaging apps, virtual private networks, and online platforms used by demonstrators.
The latest sanctions form part of the Trump administration’s broader pressure campaign on Iran. The strategy focuses on limiting oil exports, restricting financial flows, and responding to alleged human rights violations.
