Starmer and EU Leaders Oppose Trump’s Greenland Tariff Plan

European leaders criticized United States President Donald Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on several NATO allies. He linked the tariffs to US efforts to acquire Greenland from Denmark, according to ITV News.

Trump announced that the United Kingdom will face a 10 percent tariff from February 1. He also plans to increase it to 25 percent on June 1 if no deal is reached. Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland would also face the same duties.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the decision was completely wrong. He added that he will raise the matter directly with the US administration. Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also rejected the move. He argued that Europe would not bow to pressure. Meanwhile, France’s President Emmanuel Macron said he plans to speak with other European leaders.

Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated that tariffs would benefit no one. Likewise, Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store noted that threats have no place among allies.

Rising Tensions in the Arctic

Recently, the UK sent a military officer to Greenland to join a reconnaissance group. Denmark requested the support. Downing Street denied that the move amounts to a full deployment. However, officials said Arctic security has become a shared concern for NATO members.

Trump defended the tariffs on social media. He said strong action is needed to protect global peace and security. He also claimed the United States remains open to negotiation.

Starmer stressed that Greenland belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark. He said its future is for the Greenlanders and Danes to decide. In addition, he argued that NATO must work together to face new security risks in the Arctic.

EU Calls for Unity

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa urged restraint. They warned that tariffs could damage transatlantic relations. They also emphasized the need for European unity.

Former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas added that China and Russia benefit when NATO allies clash.

Economic and Political Pushback

UK political leaders also criticized the plan. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch argued that the tariffs would hurt business. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage also warned that the duties would damage the UK economy. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said the move punishes Britain.

Business groups echoed those concerns. The British Chambers of Commerce warned the plan could have a greater impact if new duties stack on existing tariffs.

Public Response in Greenland and Denmark

Thousands of people rallied in Denmark to oppose a US takeover of Greenland. Moreover, residents of Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, held rallies supporting self-governance.
