The Pro-govt youths protest Standard Group happened outside the Standard Group offices along Mombasa Road in Nairobi over what the protesters described as negative coverage of President William Ruto’s administration.

The protesters, linked to Bunge la Mwananchi, gathered at the media company’s headquarters on Friday morning. They chanted slogans and carried a petition accusing The Standard newspaper and KTN News of publishing reports they believe are critical of government policies.

The protest became tense after human rights activists arrived at the scene. The activists challenged the protesters and defended the media house, leading to a confrontation outside the offices.

Police officers and private security guards stood around the building to prevent anyone from entering by force or damaging property.

The protest came after weeks of political debate in Kenya about the role of independent media. Supporters of the government have accused some major news organizations of being too critical of the administration and its development plans.

Protesters linked to Bunge la Mwananchi also expressed anger over some recent newspaper headlines. They said the reports created unnecessary fear and concern among the public.

Human rights groups and media organizations in Kenya have criticized attempts to threaten or disrupt news organizations. Activists at the Mombasa Road protest said people have the right to criticize the government under Kenya’s democratic system.

Advocacy groups also said citizens have the right to peaceful protests and petitions. However, they warned that threats against media organizations could affect press freedom and freedom of expression.

They also noted that large protests can create safety and operational challenges for media companies. Blockades or threats could affect news broadcasts, newspaper distribution, and the safety of journalists and other staff.
