Nigerian troops have rescued three kidnap victims during a joint security operation in Anambra State. The operation was carried out around the Ihiala and Ogbaru areas.

Soldiers from the 185 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, working under Operation UDO KA, joined the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) to search for the victims and target a suspected criminal camp in the riverine area.

The security team first encountered suspected criminals around the Osakwa area. They later followed their trail to a camp hidden along the local waterways.

On October 1, 2026, troops carried out a targeted operation in the area as part of the Troops rescue kidnap victims Anambra operation and arrested a suspected member of the group identified as Sunday Obi.

During questioning, the suspect reportedly gave the troops information about the location of the group’s base. The information led security forces to a suspected camp in Abator, Ogbaru Local Government Area, across the Isieke waterside. The camp was reportedly located deep within the riverine area.

 

Using information gathered from the arrested suspect, the joint security team launched an operation as part of the Troops rescue kidnap victims Anambra effort to reach the suspected hideout. The troops used local canoes to move through the waterways around the Isieke area and approach the camp. They reportedly reached the location without being detected early.

 

When the security team arrived at the camp, a gunfight reportedly broke out between the troops and the suspected criminals. The armed group later abandoned the camp and fled into the nearby swamp forest. Some of the suspects were reportedly injured during the exchange of gunfire.

After the operation, troops searched the suspected camp and recovered weapons, ammunition, and other equipment such as Two AK-47 rifles with loaded magazines, Three pump-action shotguns and three locally made Dane guns, 149 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition and 62 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, Two shotgun cartridges and chemical materials reportedly meant for making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), Solar panels, a solar generator, power banks, car batteries, and motorcycle batteries ,Mobile phones and other communication equipment reportedly used by the group.
