Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has clarified his Peter Obi diaspora remittances remarks after facing criticism over a speech he gave at a town hall meeting in the United Kingdom. While speaking to Nigerians living abroad, Obi encouraged them to support positive change in Nigeria. He also advised them to sometimes say “no” to repeated requests for money from relatives back home.

Obi praised Nigerians abroad for sending money to their families, noting that the funds help pay for school fees, medical bills, food, and other daily needs. The meeting focused on good governance, economic growth, and how Nigerians living abroad can help develop the country ahead of the 2027 elections. Obi said that although money sent home supports millions of families, Nigeria cannot depend on foreign support forever as a long-term economic plan.
The Peter Obi diaspora remittances remarks sparked debate on social media, with political opponents criticising them as insensitive to families struggling in Nigeria. In response, his media team said Obi remains committed to helping vulnerable people and addressing the causes of poverty. The debate comes at a time when rising prices and changes in the value of the naira have made life harder for many Nigerian households.
