As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections scheduled for January and February, concerns about election security are growing. Mike Igini, a former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner, has warned about the possible use of fake National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members as election workers.

Igini urged NYSC management to carefully check the names of all corps members assigned to work during the elections and work closely with INEC. His warning about the NYSC impostors 2027 election plot highlights the need for better checks to prevent fake or unqualified personnel from serving as presiding officers at polling units. Since corps members play an important role in running polling stations, ensuring that only verified people are deployed is essential to protecting the credibility of the elections.

To address past problems with election arrangements and public concerns, INEC is working to improve its technology ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The commission plans to use upgraded Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices to improve voter verification. It is also exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor election activities and track the movement of election materials.

In addition, INEC is working to strengthen cooperation with security agencies, including the police and civil defence, to protect election materials and polling units.
