The incident happened on September 24 as the Brazilian team prepared for an upcoming match against Australia’s national team, the Socceroos.
Local First Nations custodians organized the traditional welcome to greet the Brazilian team. However, videos shared on social media appeared to show some players smiling and whispering during the cultural performance.
The footage has led to discussions among football fans and cultural commentators, with some questioning the players’ behavior during the ceremony.

The Brazilian men’s national team, known as the Seleção Brasileira, took part in a formal Welcome to Country ceremony hosted by representatives of the Wulgurukaba people. The ceremony was held as part of the traditional welcome for international sports teams visiting Indigenous lands in Australia.
The ceremony included traditional body paint, dancing, chanting, and a smoking ceremony using burnt native leaves. In First Nations traditions, the smoke is used as part of a spiritual cleansing ritual and to welcome and bless visitors.
Videos from the ceremony showed several Brazilian players standing together while Wulgurukaba performers carried out the smoking ritual nearby. The Brazil Indigenous Ceremony Reactions drew attention as some players were seen looking at each other, smiling, and trying to hide their laughter.
