The use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in football is being debated again after Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham called for the technology to be removed from the sport. During a recent discussion with young people on LADbible’s “Agree to Disagree” programme, Burnham said VAR does not always produce the right decisions and disrupts the flow of live matches.
Burnham also suggested that scrapping VAR could be considered for future Labour Party election manifestos. His Andy Burnham VAR Labour manifesto proposal has renewed debate among football fans, pundits, and officials across the United Kingdom.

LADbible’s discussion gave young people an opportunity to share their views on VAR. The Gen Z football fans who took part expressed different opinions, reflecting the wider debate among football supporters.
The suggestion to include the proposal in a political manifesto also raised questions about whether a political party should influence how football is managed. While some fans may support Burnham’s position, others may question whether scrapping VAR should be a political priority, given the other challenges facing the country.
