The Peter Obi Benue Visit was reportedly disrupted on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, after youths blocked the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate’s convoy along the Makurdi-Gboko federal highway in Benue State. Obi was scheduled to travel to Yelewata to meet with and sympathise with families affected by the June 2025 attacks.
However, his convoy encountered a roadblock reportedly set up by youths suspected to be supporters of one of the political parties. The incident prevented the delegation from proceeding to Yelewata and caused traffic disruption along the highway.
The Peter Obi Benue Visit occurred shortly after the presidential candidate arrived in Makurdi on Tuesday morning. He arrived at the Tactical Air Command Makurdi around 8 a.m. and was welcomed by the NDC governorship candidate, Professor Terhemba Shija, along with party officials and supporters.

A group of youths reportedly blocked the two-lane highway, preventing vehicles from passing through. The youths reportedly shouted at Obi and demanded that he leave the area.
Obi described the incident as unfortunate. He said his team chose not to force their way through to avoid confusion and the risk of endangering people.
Obi also appealed to security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police, to take steps to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.
Following the incident, Obi addressed journalists in Makurdi and used the opportunity to make a broader appeal for peaceful political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi called for calm and urged young Nigerians not to allow themselves to be used as instruments of political violence. He stressed the importance of peaceful political participation as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
Obi’s comments reflected his belief that candidates must be allowed to move across states and interact with citizens without facing intimidation or roadblocks.”
According to the report, a similar incident occurred in 2025 when the Benue State Government allegedly stopped Obi from visiting internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the state without getting approval first
