The New Nigeria Peoples Party NNPP has rejected reports suggesting that its members plan to defect to the All Progressives Congress APC.
The party described recent media reports claiming that former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso endorsed a possible defection as false and misleading. According to the NNPP, the reports do not reflect Kwankwaso’s position on the matter.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson, the NNPP said it has no plans to join or support any defection to the APC. The party also dismissed claims that Kwankwaso approved or encouraged such a move.
Johnson warned party members and the public against what he described as deliberate attempts to misrepresent Kwankwaso’s statements. He said twisting his words to suggest support for defection was misleading and unfair to party supporters.
The party stated that members who wish to leave should do so without attempting to claim backing from Kwankwaso or the NNPP leadership. It added that any individual confident of public support should proceed without spreading false information.
The NNPP further stated that Kwankwaso views the reported move by some members, including those linked to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, as a betrayal of the trust and mandate given by the people of Kano State.
According to the statement, Kwankwaso has called for calm amid rising political tension in the state. He also urged members who feel pressured into defecting to make their own decisions freely.
The party concluded by expressing confidence that the electorate would ultimately judge political actions during the 2027 elections.
