Somalia has praised Türkiye for its continued security and counterterrorism support during high-level talks held in Mogadishu on Sunday.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre described Türkiye as a key strategic partner. He said Ankara’s support has played an important role in strengthening Somalia’s security and stability.
Prime Minister Expresses Gratitude
During a meeting with a senior Turkish delegation, Barre thanked the Turkish government and people for their unwavering assistance.
The delegation was led by Ali Onaner, Director for Africa at Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry, alongside Ambassador Alper Aktaş.
According to a statement from the prime minister’s office, Barre expressed “deep gratitude” and noted that Türkiye has helped reinforce Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Focus on Security and Regional Stability
The talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations. They also addressed security cooperation and regional stability in the Horn of Africa.
Moreover, both sides discussed ways to deepen collaboration in counterterrorism efforts.
Türkiye’s role, Barre said, remains critical to Somalia’s long-term peace and development.
Türkiye Reaffirms Commitment
In response, Ali Onaner reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to Somalia. He pledged continued support in security, development, and humanitarian assistance.
He also stressed Ankara’s intention to further strengthen cooperation between both countries.
This engagement reflects the long-standing partnership between Türkiye and Somalia. That relationship spans defence, infrastructure, humanitarian aid, and capacity building.
Talks Held Amid Regional Tensions
Meanwhile, the visit comes amid rising regional tensions. These tensions followed Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state in December.
Somalia has strongly rejected the move. It has restated its non-negotiable commitment to national unity and territorial integrity.
Somaliland declared independence in 1991. However, it still lacks broad international recognition.
In this context, Türkiye’s continued support is seen as a stabilising factor. It also serves as a diplomatic counterbalance in the region.
