Peter Obi Anambra debt claims have started a fresh dispute between the former Anambra governor and the state government.The disagreement is about loans, unpaid bills and a disputed ecological fund.
Peter Obi, who served as Anambra governor from 2006 to March 2014, has rejected claims that his administration left unpaid salaries, pensions, gratuities or contractor debts.
Obi said his administration cleared more than ₦35 billion in old gratuities and arrears before leaving office. He also said contractors who completed and certified their projects had been paid.
The dispute has also focused on an ecological fund of more than ₦2.13 billion. Obi said the money was left in a First Bank account for an erosion control project. The Anambra Government has disputed his account and said its records do not support the claim.

The Anambra Government says the state still has loans inherited from previous administrations. Commissioner Law Mefor said eight external loans remained after Peter Obi left office in 2014. He said the balance reached ₦127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026.
The state government says the loans were linked to projects in areas such as health, education, agriculture, malaria control, community development and erosion control, and that it has continued to repay some of them.
However, the government and Obi disagree over which debts were outstanding when he left office. Official financial records could help clarify the claims.
The Anambra Government has disputed Obi’s description of the First Bank account. Law Mefor said the government obtained a certified statement showing that the account was an Internally Generated Revenue Consolidated Revenue Account, not an ecological fund account.
He also said the records did not show a ₦2.13 billion balance since the account was opened in 2011. The dispute now depends on records showing where the money came from, how it was classified and what happened to it after the 2014 handover.
