The Osun State governorship election is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 15, 2026. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, political parties, and other stakeholders to ensure peaceful participation by voters in the Osun State governorship election.
On thursday August 13, peter obi posted an appeal on his X account, addressing election officials, security personnel, political actors,voters, civil society organisations, observers, traditional and religious leaders and the media.
His statement emphasized that politics should never undermine public safety or the integrity of the electoral process.He also called on stakeholders to remain neutral,professiomal,and restrained before,during and after the election.

He further appealed the residents to ensure that political differences do not turn neighbours, friends and communities against one another. He also stated that the Osun State Governorship Election should not be subjected to violence or political intimidation simply to win the election.
Peter obi called on security personnel to remain neutral, treat every voters equally. He urged them to serve Nigeria and uphold the Constitution rather than to serve the interest of any political party or individual.
He also urged INEC to ensure that election remains credible from the begining to the end, including the declaration of the results. He specifically noted that the stages of preparation, accreditation voting, collation and declaration must be handled transparently.

According to his statment, any irregularities observed during the Osun State Governorship Election must be treated seriouslyy, while legitimate votes should be allowed to count. He also said that the people of Osun state should be allowed to make their choices freely without intimidation.
He further urged the international community, diplomatic missions, and election observers to closely monitor the electoral process to help prevent anything that could lead to violence or bloodshed.
According to the current list released by INEC, the candidates participating in the Osun State governorship election include Ademola Adeleke of Accord, APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, and ADC candidate Najeem Salam. However, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), under which Peter Obi is preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election, does not have a candidate in the Osun governorship election. This makes Obi’s intervention different from a campaign message for an NDC candidate.
Obi’s appeal ahead of the Osun State governorship election provides an opportunity to call for peaceful voting, credible conduct of the election, and respect for the choice of voters.
