Some people said the liquid could be harmless homemade tea or part of a joke. However, others raised concerns and linked the liquid to a substance popularly known as “omi gutter.”
The term “omi gutter” means “gutter water” in Yoruba because of its dark and dirty appearance. It is used to describe an unregulated street mixture that has become known in some urban areas.

The viral photos received different reactions online and raised concerns about drug abuse among young people in Nigeria. Some users said the bottles showed a growing problem of substance abuse among youths. Others called for parents and communities to pay more attention to young people and help prevent drug abuse.
Some users said the bottles could contain iced tea, herbal drinks, or traditional malt beverages. Others used the popular Nigerian phrase “science students” to joke about young people mixing different drinks or experimenting with unusual beverages.
Some people also warned against judging the individuals based only on the photos. They said taking pictures of people in a private compound and accusing them of using illegal drugs without proof could unfairly damage their reputation.
