A strong debate over Portuguese media Messi treatment Ronaldo has started after comments made by a Portuguese journalist during a live broadcast.
Luis Pedro Sousa, editor-in-chief of Portugal’s Record newspaper, said the Portuguese Football Federation and national team fans should treat Cristiano Ronaldo with the same respect and admiration that Argentina shows Lionel Messi.
His comments quickly received criticism from football fans, analysts, and social media users. The discussion has also raised questions about Portugal’s team dynamics, Ronaldo’s age, and the manager’s authority during the UEFA Nations League campaign.
The debate grew after Luis Pedro Sousa appeared on live television to discuss Cristiano Ronaldo’s role in the Portuguese national team. Sousa argued that a player with Ronaldo’s achievements should receive strong support and respect, similar to the way Argentina treats Lionel Messi.

The discussion comes at a time when Portugal’s coaching staff are trying to balance Ronaldo’s experience with changes to the team’s playing style. The call for special treatment came after Portugal’s recent UEFA Nations League match against Norway. Ronaldo stayed on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 win, which reportedly led to tension with head coach Jorge Jesus.
Reports also said Ronaldo left the national team camp shortly after the match. The situation led to more discussion about his playing time and role in the team.
After Sousa’s television comments, football fans and commentators had different reactions on social media, sports programmes, and online forums. Some fans defended Ronaldo, while others criticised the idea of giving him guaranteed special treatment.
One television pundit argued that giving Ronaldo guaranteed status could be harmful to the team. The comments led to many reactions and online memes.
The comparison between Ronaldo and Messi also highlights differences in Portuguese media Messi treatment Ronaldo and how their national teams use their star players.
