The global music community and fans of African culture are celebrating Nigerian Juju music legend Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye as he marks his King Sunny Ade 80th birthday celebration. The milestone has led to many tributes on social media, television, radio, and from cultural institutions across Nigeria, honoring a career that has lasted for more than six decades.
King Sunny Ade was born on September 22, 1946, in Osogbo to royal families from Ondo and Akure. He started his music career in highlife bands before becoming one of Africa’s most respected and internationally known musicians. His 80th birthday has renewed interest in his long music career, which includes more than 100 albums, thousands of live performances, and a major role in promoting Yoruba culture around the world.

Many important people, including fellow music legend Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey, government officials, and younger Afrobeats stars, have sent messages celebrating King Sunny Ade and praising his long and successful career. Many have described him as the “Minister of Enjoyment” because of his influence and contribution to Nigerian music.
In 1982, King Sunny Ade signed with Island Records through Mango Records, gaining international recognition with his album Juju Music. His 1983 album Synchro System earned him his first Grammy nomination, making him the first Nigerian artist to receive a Grammy nomination. He received another Grammy nomination in 1998 for Odu.
