Yobe State University, Damaturu, has officially welcomed Professor Muhammad Bashir Tahir as its fifth substantive Vice-Chancellor. He assumed office during a formal handover ceremony held at the newly renovated Senate Chamber.
Professor Tahir said his administration will focus on continuity, academic excellence, and stronger academic and administrative systems. He also pledged to promote accountability and shared responsibility across the university.
He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and thanked the Yobe State Government, the University Governing Council, and the selection committee for their confidence. He assured staff and students of inclusive leadership and stakeholder participation in decision-making.
New Registrar Also Assumes Office
The ceremony also marked the assumption of duty by Mallam Isa Audu Dallari as the Substantive Registrar of the university. He took over from the Acting Registrar, Mallam Garba Ahmadu. His appointment followed the provisions of the Yobe State University Law, 2006, as amended.
Outgoing Vice-Chancellor Highlights Achievements
Earlier, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bukar Jamri, handed over the affairs of the university to Professor Tahir. He described the transition as a major milestone and noted that his administration began on February 13, 2025.
Professor Jamri said his tenure focused on teamwork and inclusive leadership. During this period, the university recorded progress in infrastructure development, accreditation of academic programmes, staff promotions, student support services, research planning, and financial management.
He thanked the Yobe State Government, the University Governing Council, staff, and students for their support. He also congratulated the new Vice-Chancellor and Registrar and pledged continued cooperation.
Leadership Profile
Professor Tahir is a Professor of General Surgery and a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons. He previously served as Medical Director of the Ultra-Modern Police Hospital in Damaturu and brings extensive academic and administrative experience to the role.
The joint leadership transition reflects continuity and renewed commitment to growth as Yobe State University begins a new phase under substantive leadership.
