ADC records rapid growth in Anambra State
The Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Anambra State, Mr. Patrick Obianyo, has confirmed a major increase in party membership following the entry of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
Obianyo said the surge began immediately after Obi joined the ADC on December 31. Since then, politicians and supporters across the state have continued to defect to the party in large numbers.
He made this known on Saturday during a political gathering organised to welcome Hon. Barr. Lawrence Ezeudu, a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, and over 200 of his supporters.
The event took place at Ezeudu’s residence in Ifitedunu, Dunukofia Local Government Area.
Party officials overwhelmed by daily defections
Speaking at the event, Obianyo said ADC officials now receive requests daily from individuals and political groups seeking to join the party.
According to him, the party leadership has remained constantly engaged due to the volume of new entrants.
“Since Peter Obi joined our party, we have not had any rest,” Obianyo said. “Every day, people come to our offices and ask us to receive them into the ADC. Today we are in Ifitedunu. Tomorrow we will be somewhere else. This has continued for more than one month.”
He noted that the defections cut across wards and local government areas, showing growing public interest in the party.
ADC urges proper registration at ward level
Obianyo advised new members to complete their registration at the ward level to ensure proper documentation.
He explained that physical registration helps members gain full recognition within the party structure.
“We encourage new members to go to their wards and register,” he said. “Online registration is available, but ward registration ensures proper capture and participation.”
He also addressed concerns over the shortage of membership cards due to the influx of new members.
“Our cards are finishing fast because people keep joining,” Obianyo said. “However, we will soon conduct a revalidation exercise. We will also introduce improved membership cards. No matter how many people join, we will have enough cards.”
Lawrence Ezeudu explains decision to join ADC
Hon. Barr. Lawrence Ezeudu said he felt a strong personal and political calling to join the ADC.
He described the day as a turning point for himself and his supporters.
“Today is my own Pentecost,” Ezeudu said. “My supporters and I have been baptised into the ADC.”
He criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the party had failed Nigerians.
“I have never felt such urgency to join a political party,” he said. “The APC has failed us. If we do not act now, the country may collapse further.”
‘A new Nigeria is still possible’ — Ezeudu
Ezeudu said his decision followed careful observation of Nigeria’s political direction.
He expressed confidence that the ADC offers a credible platform for national change.
“We are desperate to change Nigeria,” he said. “After studying the country’s political structure, I believe a new Nigeria is still possible. That is why I joined the ADC.”
Top ADC leaders attend defection event
Several senior members of the ADC attended the event. They included the party’s deputy governorship candidate in the last election, Dr. Ndubuisi Nwobu.
Other party leaders present were Prof. Chinyere Okunna, Dr. Chris Asoukwu, and several ward and local government officials.
Party leaders described the rising membership as a sign of growing confidence in the ADC’s vision.
They said the party would continue to strengthen its grassroots structure ahead of future elections.
