Türkiye has reaffirmed its support for Nigeria in the fight against terrorism. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made this known during talks with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Ankara.

Speaking at a joint press conference, Erdogan said Nigeria is taking firm steps against terrorism. He added that Türkiye stands with the Nigerian people in this struggle.

Military and Security Cooperation

During the meeting, both leaders discussed stronger cooperation in military training and intelligence sharing. According to Erdogan, Türkiye is ready to share its experience in counterterrorism. He also warned that terrorist groups, especially in the Sahel region, threaten Africa’s stability.

Meanwhile, Nigerian officials met with leading Turkish defense companies. Erdogan expressed confidence that the talks would produce positive results.

Trade and Economic Ties

The two countries also reviewed their economic relationship. Erdogan said both sides reaffirmed the target of reaching a five-billion-dollar trade volume. As a result, they agreed to take concrete steps to boost trade.

In addition, the leaders welcomed the establishment of the Joint Economic and Trade Committee. This body will help strengthen economic cooperation.

Erdogan noted that Tinubu’s visit, alongside senior ministers, showed Nigeria’s strong interest in deeper economic ties.

Energy and Investment Cooperation

Türkiye also expressed interest in Nigeria’s energy sector. Erdogan said Türkiye supports investments in Nigeria and welcomes cooperation between Turkish and Nigerian energy companies.

He added that Nigeria plays a key role in Africa’s energy future. Therefore, Türkiye is eager to expand trade and investment in oil and gas.

Education and Development Support

Furthermore, Erdogan announced plans to open a TIKA office in Abuja. He said the office will support development projects in Nigeria.

He also highlighted cooperation in education. Türkiye currently hosts Nigerian students, and a new agreement will expand these opportunities. In addition, activities by the Maarif Foundation will support Nigerian youth.

Agreements Signed

During the visit, both countries signed nine agreements. These covered areas such as education, defense, media, diaspora affairs, and diplomatic training. They also signed agreements on women and family affairs.

Overall, Erdogan described Nigeria as a close partner in Sub-Saharan Africa. He added that Türkiye looks forward to stronger cooperation across security, trade, and development sectors.
