Manama, Jan. 20
The Kingdom of Bahrain has called on the international community to intensify efforts toward achieving an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, stressing the need for an urgent political solution through dialogue and diplomacy.
Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jamal Fares Al Rowaiei, made the call during a United Nations Security Council briefing on the situation in Darfur. The session featured a presentation by Nazhat Khan, Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, on developments in the region.

Delivering Bahrain’s official statement, Ambassador Al Rowaiei emphasized that any resolution must preserve Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity while meeting the aspirations of the Sudanese people for peace, stability, development, and prosperity.
He expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian conditions in Darfur, highlighting the rising number of civilian casualties, destruction of infrastructure and civilian facilities, and severe decline in living conditions. He noted that these developments represent serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws.
The statement stressed that the gravity of the crisis requires a comprehensive response that addresses both humanitarian needs and legal responsibilities. It also underscored the importance of respecting Sudan’s judicial sovereignty in line with the principle of complementarity under the Rome Statute, which recognizes the primary role of national courts with the International Criminal Court serving a supportive role.
Bahrain further referenced ongoing cooperation between the Sudanese government and the ICC under a memorandum of understanding signed on August 12, 2021. The Kingdom emphasized that such cooperation should strengthen Sudanese national institutions while preserving their jurisdiction and ownership of judicial processes.
