Kano State Deputy Governor, Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, was absent on Saturday as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf made his first major public appearance after leaving the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Several senior officials linked to the Kwankwasiyya political movement were also missing. Their absence further exposed growing political tension within the state government.
Event Highlights Political Divide
The governor appeared at the flag-off ceremony for the distribution of motorcycles to social media promoters. The event took place at the Open Arena of the Government House in Kano.
Although many top officials attended, the absence of key figures was noticeable. As a result, the event highlighted visible cracks within the administration.
Key Officials in Attendance
Among those present were the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Ismail Falgore, and the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Farouq.
Also present was Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, a former deputy governor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Northwest University.
Several commissioners attended the event. They included:
-
Yusuf Labaran (Health)
-
Alhaji Umar Doguwa (Water Resources)
-
Comrade Ibrahim Waiya (Information)
-
Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud (Agriculture)
Loyalists to Kwankwaso Missing
However, the deputy governor was not the only notable absentee. Other officials believed to be loyal to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso were also absent.
They included:
-
Yusuf Kofar Mata (Science, Technology and Innovation)
-
Mustapha Kwankwaso (Sports)
-
Amina HOD (Women Affairs, Children and Physically Challenged)
-
Aisha Saji (Tourism)

Their absence deepened speculation about divisions following the governor’s exit from the NNPP.
Resignations Follow Yusuf’s Exit
Meanwhile, resignations have continued after Governor Yusuf’s defection.
A former Special Adviser on Political Matters, Sunusi Sirajo, announced his resignation in a video shared on social media.
He said his decision was based on loyalty to Senator Kwankwaso. He also described Yusuf’s defection as a betrayal.
Sirajo added that government officials had earlier rejected his resignation letter.
