CBN Pensioners Commend Federal Government

Pensioners of the Central Bank of Nigeria have praised the Federal Government for resolving the long-running dispute with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

They said the agreement shows strong political will and proves that government can resolve old labour disputes through dialogue and commitment.

According to the pensioners, the ASUU agreement addressed issues that began in 2009. They described it as a major step toward restoring trust in government-labour relations.

Encouraged by the ASUU resolution, the pensioners urged the President to intervene in their own pension dispute.

They said the issue has remained unresolved for over 26 years and affects retired staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The pensioners appealed for the same fairness and sincerity shown in the ASUU negotiations.

The pension dispute began in 1997 after the Federal Government introduced the Policy on Harmonisation of Pensions.

The policy aimed to remove pension gaps among retirees with the same rank and years of service but different retirement dates.

The matter later went to court. A Federal High Court gave judgment in May 2000. The Supreme Court also ruled on the issue in May 2010.

Despite these rulings, the dispute remains unresolved.

In a joint statement, the pensioners said the Central Bank has continued to engage them in lengthy court cases.

They also expressed concern over recent actions they described as intimidation, even while the matter is still before the courts.

The pensioners called for constructive engagement instead of prolonged legal battles.

The pensioners appealed to the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene.

They asked the government to apply the same approach used in resolving the ASUU dispute.

According to them, timely action will bring relief to retired CBN staff and restore confidence in the system.
