Chartered Accountants Urge Sustained Accountability for Economic Growth
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has called for stronger accountability across all levels of government to support the nation’s economic reforms and long-term growth.
ICAN Calls for Stronger Economic Governance
The appeal was made during ICAN’s 2026 Economic Outlook Conference titled ICAN@60: Accountability as the Bedrock of National Development. The event formed part of activities marking the Institute’s 60th anniversary.
ICAN President and Chairman of Council Mallam Haruna Yahaya said Nigeria made progress in 2025 with improved GDP growth, moderating inflation, and stronger external buffers. However, he warned that these gains remain fragile without transparency, discipline, and institutional accountability.
Focus on Reform Execution
The conference featured a keynote address, panel discussions, and policy dialogue involving public and private sector leaders. Conversations centered on reform execution, economic governance, and the role of accountability in national development.
Speakers emphasized the need to convert professional insights into measurable results that support growth and stability.
Tax Reforms and Public Trust
Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, said national development goes beyond GDP figures. He highlighted the importance of stronger institutions, improved living standards, and inclusive infrastructure.
Oyedele addressed concerns about ongoing tax reforms, noting that the reforms aim to ease the tax burden rather than create new taxes.
Economic Stability and Reform Discipline
Session Chairman Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu Deen stressed the importance of credible economic governance and consistent reform execution, especially during periods of fiscal and political pressure.
Speakers agreed that Nigeria’s challenge is not a shortage of ideas but the lack of credible and disciplined execution. They urged federal, state, and local governments to act on their recommendations to support sustainable growth and public trust.
