A 73-year-old pastor, identified as Pastor Awolola, died on Monday after a fire broke out in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The incident happened around 11:58 a.m. on Cemetery Road in the Irewolede area of the city.
How the Fire Started
According to reports, Pastor Awolola set undergrowth on fire on his land. The property contained an incomplete building with a perimeter fence and a gated entrance.
However, the fire spread rapidly due to dry conditions. As a result, the flames blocked the only exit from the compound.
Failed Escape Attempt
The pastor attempted to escape through the fence. Unfortunately, he could not get out before the fire overwhelmed the area.
Meanwhile, residents alerted emergency services as the fire intensified.
Firefighters Contain the Blaze
Firefighters arrived quickly and put out the fire. Their swift response stopped the flames from spreading to nearby buildings.
Afterward, the community chairman, Mr. Sunday Nuha, received the pastor’s body for further action.
Fire Service Issues Safety Warning
Following the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, warned residents against bush and undergrowth burning.
He explained that such fires are highly dangerous, especially during dry and windy weather. Therefore, he advised residents to use safer land-clearing methods and report fire outbreaks immediately.
