Zeekoevlei Still Closed Due to Water Quality Concerns

Zeekoevlei in Cape Town remains closed as authorities continue to address water pollution caused by a sewage leak. The extended closure has increased frustration among residents and recreational users.

The City of Cape Town closed the nature reserve on 19 December after raw sewage flowed into the Lotus River. The river feeds directly into Zeekoevlei, raising serious health and environmental concerns.

Source of the Pollution

City officials say the pollution did not come from a wastewater treatment plant. Instead, untreated sewage entered the stormwater system and surfaced in the Lotus River.

Water flowing into the river comes from many areas. These include formal neighbourhoods, informal settlements, commercial zones, and informal businesses such as car washes. Officials say this has made the problem harder to resolve.

Repair and Investigation Efforts

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has launched an investigation to trace the sources of the pollution. Repair work has already started in affected areas.

Officials confirmed that upgrades to the Phillippi main sewer are underway. The City chose to begin repairs closer to the pollution source to prevent further contamination.

Community and Environmental Impact

Some community groups say the response has been slow. They also report limited communication from city departments.

The closure has affected livelihoods, sporting activities, and community programmes. Environmental concerns remain high because Zeekoevlei is a Ramsar-listed wetland with international importance.

City Response

City representatives admit that more work is needed. They say engagement with stakeholders continues and that restoring safe water quality remains the priority.

Authorities have stressed that Zeekoevlei will only reopen once water tests confirm it is safe for public use.
