Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai has clarified his relationship with President Bola Tinubu, saying they were never friends.

He made the statement during an interview on February 10, 2026. According to him, public opinion wrongly assumed a close personal bond between them.

Why El Rufai Supported Tinubu in 2023

El Rufai said his support for Tinubu in the 2023 election was political, not personal. He explained that his decision was based on the principle of power rotation to southern Nigeria.

In contrast, he described his relationship with former President Muhammadu Buhari as a genuine friendship built over many years.

Sharp Differences in Governance Views

However, El Rufai stressed that he and Tinubu do not share the same governance philosophy. He said their political paths run in parallel and will never meet.

He accused the current administration of focusing on power control rather than public service. He added that the government’s approach conflicts with values he holds as a Muslim, a Northerner, and a Nigerian.

Allegation Over Ministerial Appointment

El Rufai also repeated his claim that Tinubu blocked his ministerial appointment after the 2023 elections. He alleged that the Senate’s security clearance explanation served as a cover.

According to him, the decision confirmed the lack of trust between both sides.

These remarks reshape public understanding of El Rufai’s role in Tinubu’s rise to power and point to deeper political divisions within Nigeria’s leadership.
