President John Dramani Mahama has said he is surprised by the speed of Ghana’s economic recovery since he took office in January 2025.

According to the president, the turnaround has been faster than he anticipated. This is despite the severe economic challenges his administration inherited from the previous government.

President Speaks at Thanksgiving Service

President Mahama made the remarks at the First Sky Group’s Thanksgiving Service. The event took place in the Northern Region on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

During his address, he said the magnitude of the recovery has exceeded expectations. As a result, Ghana’s progress has drawn international attention.

He noted that the country’s economic performance has impressed major global financial institutions.

IMF and World Bank Express Surprise

The president revealed that officials from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank have expressed shock at the pace of Ghana’s recovery.

According to him, these institutions did not expect such rapid improvement within one year.

He added that Ghana has now become a reference point for economic recovery discussions.

Recovery Came Faster Than Expected

President Mahama explained that when his government took over, the economic situation was very difficult.

Initially, he believed it would take at least two years before clear improvements would appear.

However, key economic indicators improved much earlier than expected.
