The United States has deployed a small team of military officers to Nigeria, the top general of US Africa Command confirmed on Tuesday.

Deployment Follows Presidential Discussions

General Dagvin R.M. Anderson said the deployment came after talks with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in Rome last year. Both leaders agreed that the terrorist threat in West Africa requires stronger cooperation.

“That has led to increased collaboration between our nations, including a small US team bringing unique capabilities to support Nigeria’s security efforts,” Anderson said.

Background: US Airstrikes and Military Action

This deployment follows US airstrikes in Nigeria in December 2025, authorized by President Donald Trump. The move also suggests that additional military operations could occur if needed.

US Concerns Over Religious Security

Washington has expressed concerns about Nigeria’s ability to protect its Christian population. As a result, the US designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, a label given to nations accused of religious persecution.

The Nigerian government has rejected these claims, stating that armed groups attack civilians regardless of religion.

Strengthening Counter-Terrorism Cooperation

The deployment highlights growing US-Nigeria collaboration. The mission aims to enhance counter-terrorism efforts and stabilize the region, reinforcing long-term security partnerships.
