UNICEF Raises Alarm Over Child Malnutrition in South Sudan

UNICEF has warned that more than 450000 children in South Sudan are at immediate risk of acute malnutrition as escalating violence continues to disrupt health services and displace communities.

The crisis is most severe in Jonglei State, where ongoing clashes have forced large scale displacement and limited access to lifesaving care. According to UNICEF, malnutrition combined with lack of treatment significantly increases the risk of child mortality.

Violence Fuels Displacement and Health Service Collapse

At least 250000 people have been displaced across northern and central Jonglei State, according to figures from the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission. The displacement has placed additional pressure on already fragile health and nutrition systems.

UNICEF reports that fighting between government forces and opposition groups has intensified since December, worsening humanitarian conditions across affected areas.

Aid Access Severely Restricted

UNICEF says humanitarian operations are facing major challenges due to restrictions on river, air, and road travel. These limitations are preventing aid workers from reaching vulnerable children and families in urgent need of assistance.

Six counties in Jonglei State are reportedly running low on therapeutic food used to treat severe acute malnutrition. In addition, 17 health facilities across the country have closed because of conflict, while looting incidents have further reduced available medical supplies.

Risk of Disease Outbreaks Grows

Beyond malnutrition, UNICEF has warned of a possible cholera outbreak in Duk County. In response, the agency is supplying water purification equipment, buckets, and soap to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases.

Emergency health kits, malaria treatment, and therapeutic food have also been delivered to Akobo, with the aim of supporting more than 10000 people affected by the crisis.

Political Tensions Deepen the Humanitarian Emergency

The violence is unfolding against the backdrop of rising political tensions that intensified in early 2025. Divisions within the transitional government formed under the 2018 peace agreement have contributed to instability across several regions.

UNICEF has called on all parties involved to end the violence immediately and allow safe and unrestricted humanitarian access to protect children and other vulnerable populations.
