Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday led the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Eagle Square, Abuja, representing President Bola Tinubu.

President Tinubu was absent from the event as he is currently attending the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026 in the United Arab Emirates.

Honouring Fallen Heroes

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is organised annually by the Ministry of Defence to honour Nigerian soldiers who lost their lives while serving the nation.

The tribute covers personnel who died during:

  • The First and Second World Wars

  • The Nigerian Civil War

  • Peacekeeping missions

  • Internal security operations, including the fight against terrorism

Support for Veterans and Families

Beyond remembrance, the event also celebrates living veterans. It provides an opportunity to raise financial and moral support for former service members and families of fallen soldiers.

Why January 15 Matters

Nigeria observes Armed Forces Remembrance Day on January 15 to mark the end of the Nigerian Civil War. The date reflects Nigeria’s history and national experience.

Previously, as a Commonwealth member, Nigeria marked Remembrance Day on November 11, which commemorates the end of the First World War in 1918.
