At least 20 people were killed and more than 90 others injured after a deadly explosion struck a Shiite mosque in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, during Friday prayers.
According to police sources, the blast occurred while worshippers were gathered inside the mosque, causing widespread panic and severe casualties.
Suicide Attacker Detonated at Mosque Entrance
Security officials confirmed that the explosion was caused by a suicide attacker. The assailant was reportedly stopped at the mosque gate before detonating an explosive device.
The force of the blast sent glass, debris and fragments across the prayer hall. Images from the scene showed injured worshippers and bodies lying on the mosque floor as survivors attempted to escape.
Dozens Rushed to Hospital After Blast
Medical staff at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences hospital treated dozens of wounded victims following the attack. An AFP photographer at the hospital reported a steady arrival of injured people, some in critical condition.
Authorities have yet to release a final casualty figure, as rescue operations and investigations continue.
Prime Minister Condemns Attack
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the bombing, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries caused by the attack.
Security agencies have launched an investigation to identify those responsible and assess whether the attack is linked to broader militant activity.
Sectarian Violence Concerns Resurface
Shiite Muslims are a minority in Pakistan, a predominantly Sunni Muslim country with a population of over 240 million. In the past, Shiite communities have been targeted in sectarian attacks by extremist groups, including Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan, which considers Shiites heretics.
Officials have increased security around religious sites following the incident.
