Sudan has announced its return to the East African bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). The country had suspended membership two years ago. This move signals Sudan’s renewed engagement with regional partners amid ongoing conflict.

“The government of the Republic of Sudan will resume full activity in IGAD,” the Sudanese Foreign Ministry said.

Why Sudan Left IGAD

Sudan suspended its membership in January 2024. The bloc had invited Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, head of the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF), to a summit in Uganda. The meeting aimed to address the country’s conflict, which began in April 2023 between the army and RSF.

The war has killed tens of thousands and displaced over 11 million people. It is now one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

IGAD Supports Sudan’s Sovereignty

IGAD confirmed its recognition of Sudan’s sovereignty and pledged not to interfere in internal affairs. The decision followed a January meeting between IGAD’s Executive Secretary, Workneh Gebeyehu, and Sudan’s Prime Minister Kamil Idris.

After the meeting, IGAD condemned RSF violations and affirmed support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and national institutions.

Sudan’s Ongoing Conflict

The nearly three-year war has split Sudan. The army controls the north, east, and central regions. The RSF controls the west and parts of the south. It also established a parallel administration in Nyala, South Darfur, but it has no international recognition.

Regional Reaction

IGAD welcomed Sudan’s return. The bloc called it a “reaffirmation of regional solidarity and collective commitment to peace, stability, and cooperation.”

Sudan’s rejoining shows its willingness to work with regional partners while addressing domestic challenges.
