A soldier and five residents were killed during a gun battle with bandits in Zurak community, Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State. The incident occurred on Monday around 3:00 pm. Three soldiers are still missing following the clash.
Details of the Attack
According to youth leader Shapi’i Sambo, the bandits had earlier burned houses in nearby Sabon Gari community. They also looted shops and took away food items and valuables. The body of the slain soldier was moved to Jos.
A resident, Jibrin Isa, said the attack left Zurak deserted. Most residents fled to neighboring villages out of fear for their lives. He called on authorities to intervene and restore law and order.
“This incident is devastating,” Isa said. “Zurak community is currently deserted as residents have fled for fear of further attacks.”

Related Violence in Katsina State
In a separate incident, a vigilante was killed during a bandit attack on Keware Village in Sabuwa Local Government Area, Katsina State. The attack occurred early Sunday morning, fatally wounding 32-year-old Civilian Watch (Cwatch) member Isiya Keware.
Security forces, including Operation FANSAN YANMA troops, the Nigeria Police, and Cwatch patrols, engaged the attackers in a sustained gun battle, forcing them to flee.

The recent attacks highlight the persistent security challenges in northern and central Nigeria, particularly in Plateau, Kaduna, and Katsina states, where banditry and raids continue to threaten communities.
