A Russian drone strike killed a couple overnight in southern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, local officials said on Thursday.
The victims were a 49 year old man and a 48 year old woman. The attack hit their home in the city of Vilniansk, according to regional military chief Ivan Fedorov.
Teenager Injured in Separate Attack
In a separate strike, a 14 year old boy was wounded in the regional capital, also called Zaporizhzhia. Fedorov confirmed the injury in an earlier statement.
Emergency services responded to both incidents as authorities assessed the damage.
Reports of New Attack Near Kharkiv
Officials also reported a possible Russian attack on the outskirts of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city. Regional military head Oleg Synegubov said there were no immediate reports of casualties.
Attacks Continue After Peace Talks
The strike came shortly after Russian and Ukrainian officials held U.S. mediated talks in Abu Dhabi. The discussions aimed to find a path toward ending Russia’s four year invasion of Ukraine.
The talks led to the first prisoner exchange in four months. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the negotiations as complex and called for faster progress.
Ukraine’s lead negotiator later said talks would continue in the coming weeks.
Fighting Resumes Across Ukraine
Fighting has intensified in recent days. The Kremlin had earlier agreed to a U.S. request not to strike the Ukrainian capital Kyiv for seven days. That pause is set to end on February 8.
Ukrainian officials accused Russia of targeting energy facilities. The attacks caused power and heating outages during freezing temperatures.
Ukraine Also Accused of Cross Border Strike
In Russia, Belgorod Mayor Valentin Demidov said a Ukrainian missile strike damaged infrastructure in the city. The attack cut power, heat and water in some areas.
Officials reported no casualties.
