Lawmakers Move Against Rivers Governor

The Rivers State House of Assembly has begun impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.

Lawmakers presented formal notices of alleged gross misconduct during a plenary session. The action follows provisions of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Allegations Read on the Floor

The Leader of the House, Major Jack, read the notice of allegations against the Governor. Meanwhile, the Deputy Leader, Linda Stewart, read the notice against the Deputy Governor.

According to the lawmakers, both officials breached constitutional and legal requirements while in office.

Key Allegations Listed

The notice listed several claims against the Governor and his deputy. These include failure to present the state budget to the House and spending public funds without legislative approval.

Lawmakers also accused the executive of withholding salaries and statutory funds meant for the House of Assembly, the Clerk, and the Assembly Service Commission.

In addition, the notice cited refusal to allow the screening of government appointments by the recognised Assembly. It also mentioned the demolition of the Assembly complex as part of the allegations.

Lawmakers Question Leadership Capacity

A total of 26 lawmakers supported the notice. They stated that the Governor and his deputy lack the capacity to carry out their constitutional duties.

The Speaker of the House said the Assembly would follow due process throughout the proceedings.

Next Steps in the Process

The Speaker confirmed that both notices would be served on the Governor and Deputy Governor. This will happen within seven days, as required by law.

Further details are expected as the impeachment process continues.
