US Announces Support for Fragile Ceasefire
The United States has announced a $45m aid package to support a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand. The funding aims to strengthen peace efforts after weeks of deadly border clashes.
US officials said the assistance will help both countries stabilize border areas and support communities affected by the fighting.
Breakdown of the Aid Package
According to US officials, $20m will go toward fighting drug trafficking and cyber scams. These crimes have become a major concern in parts of Cambodia and the wider region.
In addition, $15m will support border stabilization efforts. This funding will help displaced civilians return home and rebuild their lives.
The remaining $10m will be used for demining and clearing unexploded ordnance. These operations aim to reduce long term risks in conflict affected areas.
Talks With Regional Leaders
The US assistant secretary for East Asia held meetings with senior officials in Thailand and Cambodia. The discussions focused on implementing the peace agreement and preventing renewed violence.
US officials said they remain committed to supporting both governments as they work toward lasting stability.
Background to the Conflict
Fighting along the Cambodia Thailand border resumed last month after an earlier truce collapsed. The latest clashes lasted 20 days and killed more than 100 people.
The violence also forced over half a million people to flee their homes on both sides of the border.
Thailand and Cambodia agreed to a new ceasefire on December 27. While tensions remain, both sides have reaffirmed their commitment to the agreement.
Longstanding Border Dispute
The conflict stems from a long running dispute over border boundaries set during the colonial era. Both countries claim ownership of several areas along their shared border, including historic temple sites.
Despite the challenges, international efforts continue to push for dialogue and cooperation between the two neighbors.
