Education as a Driver of Equity and Growth

As the world observes International Day of Education, Mr. Ezeukoh Ebubechukwu, an MBA graduate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has emphasized that education is central to social equity, economic participation, and long-term societal stability.

The United Nations General Assembly in 2018 designated January 24 as International Day of Education to celebrate the transformative power of learning. Despite this, over 250 million children remain out of school globally, while 763 million adults are illiterate, according to UNESCO.

Call for Alignment with Global Standards

At a recent UNILAG convocation, Ebubechukwu urged educational institutions in Nigeria to adopt international standards and best practices. He warned that when education systems fail to adapt, they exclude more people than they empower.

“Education must be accessible, practical, and responsive to the realities faced by students and young people. Improving foundational access, aligning with global standards, and designing support systems for financial realities are crucial steps,” Ebubechukwu said.

Youth and the Future of Education

The 2026 International Education Day theme, “The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education,” highlights the role young people play in shaping the future of learning. Ebubechukwu stressed that youth engagement ensures education remains relevant, practical, and inclusive.

“Education remains a key driver of social development, economic participation, and long-term stability across societies,” he added.

Supporting Rural Education Through the EEF

Ebubechukwu is the founder of the Ebubechukwu Eziokwe Foundation (EEF), a non-profit organization committed to fighting illiteracy. The foundation annually supports rural children through its “Bookdrive” initiative, providing learning materials and resources.

“With access to quality education, individuals can break cycles of poverty and contribute to community development. Our goal is to ensure that children in rural and sub-urban communities receive proper education and materials,” he said.

He also called on educational institutions to maintain alignment with international standards, preparing students for opportunities beyond local systems.

Student Loan Initiative: Praise and Recommendations

Ebubechukwu commended the Federal Government’s student loan initiative under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. However, he recommended simplified and tiered processes for accessing funds.

“The student loan initiative is commendable, but the requirements are too stringent. Smaller loans should have fewer conditions, while larger loans can reasonably undergo more scrutiny,” he explained.
