US President Donald Trump has softened his stance on the United Kingdom’s plan to transfer the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. The islands include Diego Garcia, which hosts a major US military base.
Previously, Trump criticised the agreement and warned it could affect US security interests. However, talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer appear to have reduced tensions.
Trump Responds After Talks With UK Prime Minister
Following discussions with Starmer, Trump said the UK leader reassured him about the future of US operations on the island. He described the talks as productive and acknowledged that the deal reflected difficult negotiations.
Trump said he understood the pressure facing the UK government during the agreement process.
Strong Warning on US Military Presence
Despite the softer tone, Trump issued a clear warning about Diego Garcia. He said the United States would act if any future decision threatened its military base.
According to Trump, the US could move to secure the island if lease terms collapse or if American forces face danger. He stressed that the base plays a key role in national security.
Trump Rules Out Any Threat to Diego Garcia
Trump also said he would not allow legal or environmental claims to weaken US control of the base. He added that American operations would continue regardless of future political changes.
The president reaffirmed that Diego Garcia remains a critical military location in the Indian Ocean.
