Buffalo Sabres’ Rasmus Dahlin and Fiancée Announce Loss of Unborn Baby
Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin and his fiancée Carolina Matovac have shared heartbreaking news about the loss of their unborn baby. The tragedy occurred amid Matovac’s serious health crisis last year.
Heart Transplant and Pregnancy Complications
Matovac became seriously ill while on vacation in France last summer. Her condition caused major heart failure, requiring a heart transplant. At the time, she was pregnant, but the pregnancy ended tragically amid her medical emergency.

Dahlin temporarily stepped away from the Sabres to support Matovac during her recovery.
Emotional Announcement on Instagram
The couple revealed the loss on what would have been their baby’s due date. Matovac shared a photo on Instagram showing her receiving medical care, with Dahlin crouched beside her.
She wrote:
“Today was meant to be the day we finally met you. You will always hold a special place in our hearts as our first baby, even though we never had the chance to meet. You played a vital role in my survival and recovery.”
Dahlin’s Support During Recovery
Dahlin, 25, in his eighth NHL season, described how Matovac required CPR multiple times and spent weeks on life support before receiving her new heart.
He took an indefinite leave from Buffalo to return to Sweden and be with her. Dahlin rejoined the team in November following her recovery.
Looking Ahead
The couple’s story reflects resilience in the face of personal tragedy. Fans and followers continue to express support as Dahlin and Matovac navigate recovery and loss.
