Partnership Aims to Improve Child Welfare
The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have signed a cooperation protocol designed to improve living conditions for children and young people in Cameroon. The signing took place on January 22, 2026, in the capital city, Yaounde.
The ceremony was attended by Türkiye’s Ambassador to Yaounde, Volkan Öskiper; TIKA Yaounde Coordinator, Melih Çağatay Artunay; UNICEF Cameroon Representative, Nadine Perrault; as well as officials from diplomatic missions and partner institutions.
Focus on Vulnerable Communities
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Öskiper highlighted that the protocol marks the start of a new and constructive phase of collaboration. He noted that it will allow both organizations to operate within a more sustainable, effective, and coordinated framework.
Artunay emphasized that TIKA prioritizes projects targeting vulnerable groups, particularly children and youth. He added that the partnership with UNICEF is expected to generate tangible results on the ground, especially in regions affected by climate change and humanitarian challenges.
Strengthening UNICEF Programs
UNICEF’s representative, Nadine Perrault, highlighted that the cooperation will enhance flexibility and operational efficiency in UNICEF programs. She explained that combining the expertise of both organizations will create strong synergy in advancing children’s rights and promoting youth participation in society.
The partnership will specifically support UNICEF initiatives such as “U-Report” and “U-Responders.” These programs focus on empowering young people to actively participate in decision-making and emergency response efforts.
Focus on High-Risk Regions
The protocol includes measures to strengthen emergency response capacity in Cameroon’s Far North, Northwest, and Southwest regions, where children are disproportionately affected by humanitarian crises. The initiative aims to reduce risks faced by vulnerable communities and improve access to essential services.
Infrastructure, Education, and Awareness Campaigns
Beyond emergency support, the partnership will provide environmental protection and disaster response equipment for young volunteers. It will also implement community-based education activities and rehabilitate critical infrastructure in affected areas.
Additionally, TIKA and UNICEF plan to roll out joint communication campaigns to raise awareness of children’s rights. These campaigns will inform local communities and engage youth in meaningful social action.
Commitment to Sustainable Impact
Both organizations stressed that this cooperation is a long-term commitment. The protocol reflects a shared goal of creating sustainable improvements in the lives of children and youth across Cameroon. It combines emergency relief, educational support, and community engagement to ensure a comprehensive approach to child welfare.
