Swiss prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the managers of a bar in the alpine resort of Crans-Montana following a devastating fire that killed 40 people and injured at least 119 others.
Authorities in the canton of Valais confirmed that the bar’s managers, a French couple, are under investigation on suspicion of manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence. The investigation is focused on whether safety failures at the venue contributed to the tragedy.
What Caused the Fire
Preliminary findings indicate that the fire at Le Constellation, a popular nightlife venue, was likely triggered by sparklers attached to bottles being carried too close to the ceiling. Investigators are examining whether the bar’s acoustic foam materials played a role in accelerating the blaze and whether they complied with fire safety regulations.
Prosecutors stated that technical inspections are ongoing to determine if building standards and safety measures were properly followed.
Victims and Identification Process
Among those killed were at least eight Swiss nationals, whose identities were the first to be confirmed. All identified victims so far were aged between 16 and 24 years. Authorities have not yet publicly released names.
Many of the victims were teenagers, as the bar was known to attract a young crowd. In Switzerland, the legal drinking age for beer and wine is 16.
Officials said the identification process has been slow due to the severity of burn injuries, with authorities working closely with international teams to support affected families.
International Response and Family Support
Families of victims were directed to a nearby conference centre for assistance, where representatives from emergency response teams and diplomatic missions were present. Officials said the identification process was expected to be completed within days.
A helpline has been established for relatives seeking information.

Community Mourning
Outside the damaged bar, mourners have gathered to leave flowers, candles, and personal messages. The ski resort town remains in shock as investigations continue into one of the deadliest nightlife fires in recent Swiss history.
