Suspended EMPD Head Julius Mkhwanazi to Face Parliamentary Police Committee
January 21, 2026
Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department chief Julius Mkhwanazi will appear before Parliament Police Ad Hoc Committee on Thursday. He will answer allegations of corruption and links to an alleged crime syndicate.
The committee is investigating claims that Mkhwanazi had ties with alleged crime figure Vusimuzi Cat Matlala. It will also examine whether he received financial benefits connected to this relationship.
Mkhwanazi appearance follows testimony by former Independent Police Investigative Directorate head Robert McBride. McBride appeared before the committee on Wednesday. He denied claims that he targeted police officers or interfered with police work.
Last year, Mkhwanazi testified before the Madlanga Commission. The commission questioned him about allegations that he helped install police blue lights on private vehicles linked to Matlala.
The commission also heard that Mkhwanazi received a salary increase after his appointment as deputy police chief. This increase reportedly followed the blue lights scandal.
Mkhwanazi denied all allegations during the commission hearings. He said he did not install blue lights or brand any vehicles. He also claimed he never saw the vehicles in question.
The parliamentary committee will now review his testimony. Members will focus on alleged misuse of police resources and possible ethical violations.
The committee plans to hear from forensic investigator Paul O Sullivan next week. It remains unclear whether he will appear in person.
