Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has denied reports that US military officers arrested him at a Nigerian airport.

The claims circulated online after a viral image appeared to show the cleric in custody. However, Gumi called the story false and misleading.

Viral Image Is Fake

Gumi said the viral image was AI-generated.

He asked, “The US Army cannot arrest me in Nigeria. Why would they? For what reason?”

In addition, he confirmed he has not been detained in any way. He described the posts as fabricated to mislead the public and create unnecessary tension.

Speculation on Travel and Terrorism Links

Some online reports suggested Gumi was trying to leave Nigeria for Turkey and was stopped because of alleged links to terrorist groups.

Nevertheless, no Nigerian or foreign authorities have confirmed these claims.

Controversial Engagements in Northern Nigeria

Gumi has drawn attention for meeting with armed groups in northern Nigeria.

In 2021, he negotiated with bandit leaders in Kaduna, Zamfara, and nearby states to secure the release of kidnapped victims. Several hostages were freed, earning praise from families and local communities.

However, security experts and civil society organizations criticized his approach. They argued that meeting armed groups without approval could weaken counter-terrorism efforts and potentially support criminal networks.

No Legal Charges

So far, no Nigerian court has charged Gumi with terrorism-related offences. As a result, he remains free while continuing his public activities.
