A senior Russian military official is in hospital after an attacker shot him several times in Moscow in what appears to be an assassination attempt.
Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, a top intelligence officer, came under attack inside an apartment building in the Russian capital on Friday. The shooting adds to a growing number of attacks on senior Russian officers since the Ukraine war began.
Gunman Attacks General in Moscow

Russia’s Investigative Committee said an unknown person opened fire on Alekseyev and then escaped.
Emergency teams rushed the general to a hospital, where doctors are treating his injuries. Officials have not released details about the suspect yet.
Investigators have started a manhunt and are reviewing evidence from the scene.
Alekseyev’s Role in Russian Military
Alekseyev serves as the first deputy chief of Russia’s General Staff. This role places him among the country’s highest ranking officers.
He led intelligence missions during Russia’s campaign in Syria. Later, he helped negotiate with Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin during the failed mutiny in 2023.
Pattern of Attacks on Russian Officers
Since Russia launched its full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, attackers have targeted several top military figures.
In December, a bomb under a car killed Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, who led army training. Ukrainian officials later claimed involvement.
Earlier, an explosive device hidden on a scooter killed General Igor Kirillov outside his Moscow apartment building. A Russian court later jailed a suspect for life.
Authorities Continue Investigation
Security teams are now searching for the attacker. Officers are also checking cameras and questioning witnesses.
Officials say they will take legal action once they identify those behind the shooting.
Conclusão
The shooting of Vladimir Alekseyev shows rising risks for Russia’s military leadership. As attacks increase, security around top officials remains under pressure during the ongoing Russia Ukraine war.
