Severe winter weather has hit northern Japan, causing widespread damage and loss of life. Local media report that at least 35 people have died, while more than 350 others have suffered injuries.
Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency confirmed that the death toll has continued to rise since the storms began on January 20. Public broadcaster NHK reported the updated figures.
Worst Affected Prefectures
Several prefectures recorded multiple fatalities as heavy snow disrupted daily life and emergency services.
Niigata reported the highest number of deaths with 12 cases.
Akita recorded 7 deaths.
Yamagata reported 5 deaths.
Hokkaido and Aomori recorded 4 deaths each.
Iwate also reported 4 deaths.
Nagano and Shimane each reported 1 death.
Authorities said most victims died due to landslides, falling snow, and other snow related accidents.
Injury Reports and Emergency Response
Officials confirmed that 358 people sustained injuries. These included both serious and minor cases. Emergency teams continue rescue and cleanup efforts across affected regions.
Road closures, power disruptions, and transport delays have added to the challenges faced by residents.
Weather Warnings Remain in Place
Meteorological authorities warned that heavy snowfall will continue through the weekend. Rising temperatures may cause snow to melt quickly, increasing the risk of landslides and road accidents.
Japan’s government spokesperson urged residents in affected areas to remain cautious, especially near slopes and poorly cleared roads.
